STUART SMITH - Artistic Director

Stuart is the Artistic Director at Options Theatre Company and has an extensive background in Performance Arts. Stuart has produced, directed, edited, written and performed in a variety of stage and screen productions and has worked with many industry professionals throughout his career.

About Stuart

Stuart studied Arts and Education at UNSW and University of Newcastle and worked as a Lecturer and Tutor in Creative Arts Education.

Stuart is currently the Artistic Director for Options Theatre Company which is recognised as one of Australia’s Leading NDIS supported Arts Programs for people with disability.

Stuart has worked and played in many areas of the Creative Arts and as a talented Director, Writer, Actor, Musician, Singer and Film Producer, he brings a depth of industry experience to the role of Artistic Director at Options Theatre Company.

National Productions

Career highlights include:

  • Working as a collaborator on the Australian Rock Opera ‘Paris’ written by Jon English
    and David Mackay and the stage musical ‘Back to the 80s’, written by Neil Gooding.
  • Stuart was a performer, writer and stage director on the National Tour of the highly
    acclaimed Rock Musical, ‘The Rock Show’, which he created with Isaac Hayward
    and Jon English. ‘The Rock Show’ delighted audiences all around Australia with sold-out
    performances, won two Mo Awards and received an ARIA nomination.
  • Stuart Directed Julia Morris’ National ‘Lift and Separate’ Tour
  • Stuart Directed, Filmed and Edited the short film ‘Remote’ for the National Museum
    of Australia’s ‘Momentous’ Exhibition for International Day of People with Disability.

Other Productions

Central Coast Productions

  • Stuart directed productions of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’, ‘Back to the 80’s’ and ‘Paris’
  • Stuart was also set and lighting designer for many productions including ‘Evita’, ‘Strictly Ballroom’ and ‘Into the Woods’
  • Stuart recently played The Baker in Curtain Bounce’s production of ‘Into the Woods’.

TV Shows & Podcasts 

  • Stuart appeared in Series One of the NetFlix Hit Series ‘Love on the Spectrum’
  • Stuart recently featured in an interview with Michael Theo in the ‘Mr A Plus Podcast’ on Spotify.

Options Theatre Company

  • Stuart has directed live performances of Options Theatre Company productions including ‘Grease’, ‘Cornucopia’, ‘Encore’, ‘Clash at Titan High’, ‘The Friday Show’ and the recent short film ‘Remote’.
